We wrap and seal the unit before it moves if the contents have spoiled, strap it, and carry it out on a stair dolly. Chest freezers are the harder of the two shapes — they are wide, the lid wants to swing, and there is no good place for a second person to grip on a narrow stairway. We plan the route first and take the basement door off its hinges if that is what the corner requires. Upright freezers come out much like a refrigerator does.

We route units to a scrap yard equipped for that step rather than to a landfill. Once the refrigerant is out, the cabinet and compressor recycle as steel. A freezer that still runs and is clean is worth offering for reuse, so tell us if yours works — there is usually somebody who wants a second one.
Frequently Asked Questions
It has spoiled food in it and smells terrible. Will you still take it?
Yes. Mention it when you call so we come with the right gear. The single best thing you can do is leave the lid closed — opening it to show us does not help anyone, and a sealed unit travels much better than an aired-out one.
Should I defrost it first?
If it is convenient, yes, because melting ice is weight and water. If it is not convenient, we will wrap the base and manage the drip. Do not feel like you have to chip out a freezer before we arrive.
Can you take it out of a barn or outbuilding with no finished floor?
Usually easier than a house, as long as the truck can get reasonably close. Uneven ground and a long carry are worth mentioning on the phone so the quote is right the first time.
